Kakavia, Albania - Between 29 November and 18 December 2018 a Common Operation DRINO II took place in Albania at the green border area with Greece in Kakavia region, which is one of the main entry points from Greece into Albania along the newly established Adriatic migration route. The operational assistance was requested by the Albanian Ministry of Internal Affairs in light of enhanced migration flow. The operation engaged officers from 9 different countries and was aimed at detection of illegal crossings of state border along the green border, conducting interviews with migrants and addressing various forms of cross border criminality. Over 130 illegal crossings of state border have been detected. The experts in debriefing procedures, supported by cultural mediators, have also conducted over 20 detailed interviews with migrants from various countries (Syria, Pakistan, Morrocco, Iraq, Algeria) and obtained valuable information on the modus operandi, facilitators and routes of the migrants, travelling to various countries in the EU.
The activity is supported within the project jointly financed by the EU and the Federal Republic of Germany, implemented by GIZ.
